Opening the Tailgate

• The tailgate locks or unlocks when all doors are locked or unlocked with the transmitter (or smart key) or the central door lock switch.
• If the tailgate is unlocked, it can be opened by pressing the handle and pulling it up.
• When all doors are locked, if the tailgate unlock button on the smart key is pressed for more than 1 second, the tailgate is unlocked. Once the tailgate is opened and then closed, the tailgate locks automatically.

NOTICE

In cold and humid climates, the door lock and door mechanisms may not operate properly due to freezing conditions.

WARNING

The tailgate swings upward. Make sure there are no objects or people near the rear of the vehicle when opening the tailgate.

CAUTION

Make sure the tailgate is closed before driving the vehicle. The tailgate lift cylinders and attached hardware may be damaged if the tailgate is not closed before driving.

Closing the Tailgate

To close the tailgate, lower it and press it firmly down. Make sure the tailgate is securely locked.

WARNING

Make sure your hands, feet, and other parts of your body are safely clear of the path before closing the tailgate.

CAUTION

Make sure nothing is near the tailgate latch and striker when closing the tailgate. This may damage the tailgate latch.

WARNING

Exhaust Gas

If you drive with the tailgate open, dangerous exhaust gas may enter your vehicle, which may cause serious injury or death to vehicle occupants.

If you must drive with the tailgate open, keep the vents and all windows open so that additional outside air enters the vehicle.

WARNING

Rear Cargo Area

Passengers should never ride in the rear cargo area, where restraints are not available. To avoid injury in the event of an accident or sudden stops, passengers must always be properly restrained.

WARNING

No one should be allowed to occupy the cargo area of the vehicle at any time. The cargo area is a very dangerous place in the event of an accident.
