Refueling the Lexus GS (L10) is supported by a range of safety features. From the special fuel filler door to the unleaded fuel filler neck, everything is designed to prevent misfueling and accidents. This chapter describes the refueling procedure and provides important information on handling the fuel cap, discharging static electricity, and protecting against overflow. This makes every refueling safe and straightforward.

Opening the Fuel Filler Door

Follow the steps below to open the fuel filler door:

Before Refueling the Vehicle

  • Turn the engine switch off and make sure all doors and windows are closed.
  • Make sure the correct fuel is available.

Fuel Types

Fuel Filler Neck for Unleaded Gasoline

To prevent misfueling, your vehicle has a fuel filler neck that only accepts the special nozzle of unleaded gasoline pumps.

WARNING

When Refueling the Vehicle

Observe the following precautions while refueling. Otherwise, death or serious injury may result.

  • After getting out of the vehicle and before opening the fuel filler door, touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity that may have built up. It is important to discharge static electricity before refueling, as sparks generated by static electricity can ignite fuel vapor during refueling.
  • Always grip the fuel cap by its handle and turn it slowly. A hissing sound may be heard when loosening the fuel cap. Wait until the sound stops before removing the cap completely. In hot weather, pressurized fuel may spray out of the filler neck and cause injury.
  • Make sure that no one who has not discharged static electricity from their body is near an open fuel tank.
  • Do not breathe in fuel vapors. Fuel contains substances that are harmful to health.
  • Do not smoke while refueling the vehicle. Otherwise, the fuel may ignite and cause a fire.
  • Do not return to the vehicle and do not touch any person or object that carries a static charge. Static electricity may build up and create a risk of ignition.

When Refueling

To prevent fuel from overflowing from the fuel tank, observe the following precautions:

  • Hang the fuel nozzle properly in the fuel filler neck.
  • Stop filling the tank after the fuel nozzle has shut off automatically.
  • Do not top off the fuel tank.
NOTE

Refueling

Do not spill fuel while refueling.

Otherwise, the vehicle may be damaged, for example, the emission control system may malfunction, fuel system components may be damaged, or the vehicle paint may be damaged.
