Before driving

Driving in hazardous conditions

~1min read

WARNING

Use extreme care when downshifting on slippery surfaces:

Downshifting to a low gear when driving on slippery surfaces is dangerous. A sudden change in wheel rotation speed may cause the wheels to skid. This may result in loss of vehicle control and cause an accident.

When driving on ice, water, snow, mud, sand or in any other hazardous condition:

  • Drive carefully and keep a sufficient distance for braking.
  • Avoid sudden braking or sudden maneuvers.
  • Do not pump the brake pedal.

    Keep the pedal depressed.

Refer to "Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)" on page 4-99.

  • If the vehicle gets stuck, select a lower gear and accelerate gently. Do not spin the front wheels.
  • For more traction when starting on slippery surfaces such as ice or hard snow, use sand, salt, chains, mats or other non-slip material under the front wheels.

NOTE

Use chains on the front wheels only.
