Attention Assist
Introduction
ATTENTION ASSIST is designed to help you on long, monotonous journeys, for example on motorways or expressways. It operates between 80 km/h and 180 km/h.
When ATTENTION ASSIST detects signs of fatigue or increasing lack of attentiveness in the driver, it recommends that you take a break.
Important safety notes
WARNINGATTENTION ASSIST is only an assistance system and may not always detect your fatigue or increasing lack of attentiveness in time. It can never replace a rested and attentive driver.
When you are tired, you may recognise critical situations late, assess them incorrectly or react more slowly. Before setting off and during the journey, make sure that you are rested. Take regular breaks in good time, especially on long journeys. Otherwise, you could cause an accident and injure yourself or others.
ATTENTION ASSIST assesses your fatigue or increasing lack of attentiveness based on the following criteria:
- your driving style (steering behaviour, for example)
- the journey (time, duration, etc.)
ATTENTION ASSIST operates to a limited extent and may not issue a warning, or may do so only late, in the following cases:
- when the road surface is in poor condition (uneven road surface, potholes, for example)
- in strong crosswinds
- if you adopt a sporty driving style (high speed through bends, strong acceleration)
- if you mainly drive below 80 km/h or above 180 km/h
- when you operate COMAND Online or use it to make phone calls
- when the time setting is incorrect
- in active driving situations, for example when changing lanes, accelerating or braking
Warning and display on the multifunction display

Vehicles with automatic transmission (example)
- Activate ATTENTION ASSIST via the on-board computer.
Symbol 1 appears on the multifunction display.
Once activated, ATTENTION ASSIST first warns you after approximately 20 minutes of driving at the earliest. A periodic warning tone sounds twice and the message Attention Assist: Take a break appears on the multifunction display.
- Take a break if necessary.
- Press
to confirm the message.
On long journeys, take regular breaks in good time to rest. If you do not take a break, you will only be warned again after at least 15 minutes. For this to happen, ATTENTION ASSIST must continue to detect signs of fatigue or increasing lack of attentiveness.
ATTENTION ASSIST is reset and starts monitoring your fatigue level again if you continue the journey after:
- you switch off the engine
- you unfasten your seat belt and open the driver's door, for example to get out or to take a break
