In driving program M, you can shift gears yourself using the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

If you pull the left or right paddle on the steering wheel while automatic driving program E or S is selected, the automatic transmission switches to driving program M for a limited time. Depending on the paddle you pull, the automatic transmission immediately engages the next lower or next higher gear.

You can only shift gears using the paddles on the steering wheel when the selector lever is in D.
