~3min read

General notes

The HOLD function assists you on request

  • when starting the vehicle, especially on an incline
  • when maneuvering on sloping terrain
  • during waiting periods caused by traffic conditions

The vehicle is held stationary without the need to press the brake pedal.

If you press the accelerator pedal to start moving, the vehicle is no longer braked and the HOLD function is deactivated.

Important safety notes

WARNING

When the HOLD function is activated, the vehicle is braked. Therefore, deactivate the HOLD function if the vehicle is to be towed or driven through an automatic car wash.

WARNING

Never leave the vehicle with the HOLD function activated! The HOLD function must never be used or deactivated by a passenger or from outside the vehicle.

The HOLD function does not replace the electric parking brake and must not be used to secure the vehicle.

The braking provided by the HOLD function is no longer active and the vehicle may roll away if

  • the HOLD function is deactivated by pressing the accelerator pedal or the brake pedal
  • the system or the power supply has a fault (a battery failure, for example)
  • work is performed on the electrical system in the engine compartment, or on the battery or fuses
  • you disconnect the battery

When you leave the vehicle or switch it off, deactivate the HOLD function and secure the vehicle so that it cannot roll away.

The HOLD function is deactivated when

  • you press the accelerator pedal while the gearshift is in D or R
  • you shift the gearshift to P
  • you press the brake pedal again with some force untilmultifonctiondisappears from the multifunction display
  • you apply the electric parking brake
  • you activate DISTRONIC PLUS
After a certain time, your vehicle is held by the electric parking brake to relieve the service brake.

The electric parking brake automatically holds the vehicle if the HOLD function is activated and

  • you open the driver's door and unfasten your seat belt
