Wheels and tires

Wheel change. Flat tire. Changing wheels

~3min read

The tire pressure monitor with display in the Mercedes E-Class (4th gen, W212, 2009–2016) provides precise information on the current values of each tire. This section describes how drivers can recognize deviations in time and take action to ensure optimal ride comfort and safety.

Tyre puncture

For information on what to do in the event of a flat tire, refer to the “Breakdown assistance” chapter. For information on driving with MOExtended tires (tires with run-flat properties) in the event of a flat, refer to “MOExtended tires (tires with run-flat properties)”.

Vehicles with a temporary spare wheel: Mount the temporary spare wheel in an emergency as described under “Wheel mounting”. For more information, refer to that section.

Changing wheels

WARNING

If you swap the front and rear wheels when the wheels or tires have different dimensions, driving characteristics may be severely impaired. The wheel brakes or suspension components may also be damaged. There is a risk of accident!

Only swap the front and rear wheels if the wheels and tires have identical dimensions.

NOTE

If your vehicle is equipped with tire pressure monitoring, electronic components are located in the wheels.

Do not place tire mounting tools on the valve area. Otherwise, the electronic components may be damaged.

Have the tires changed only by a qualified specialist workshop.

If you swap the front and rear wheels when wheel or tire sizes differ, the vehicle's operating permit may become invalid.

Be sure to observe the instructions and safety notes in the “Wheel mounting” section.

Front and rear wheels wear differently depending on operating conditions. Change the wheels before a characteristic wear pattern develops on the tires. Characteristic wear is at the shoulder on front wheels and in the center of the tire on rear wheels.

For vehicles with the same wheel size, you can rotate the wheels every 5,000 to 10,000 km, depending on the degree of wear. Keep the direction of rotation of the wheels the same.

Thoroughly clean the contact surfaces of the wheel and brake disc each time you change wheels. Check the tire pressure and, if necessary, reset the tire pressure loss warning more or tire pressure monitoring more.

Direction of rotation

Tires with a prescribed direction of rotation offer additional advantages, for example in aquaplaning conditions. You can only benefit from these advantages if the direction of rotation was observed during mounting.

An arrow on the sidewall indicates the tire's direction of rotation.

Storing wheels

Store removed wheels in a cool, dry place, preferably in the dark. Protect the tires from oil, grease and fuel.

The notes on MOExtended tires for the Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016) highlight their safety benefits. These tires allow limited driving even after air loss, so you can reach the next workshop safely. This significantly reduces the risk of being stranded.

Regularly checking tire pressure is especially important, because even MOExtended tires are only a temporary solution in the event of a puncture. Mercedes combines innovative technology with a maximum level of safety.

Question: What does MOExtended mean for tires?

Answer: MOExtended stands for run-flat tires that allow limited driving after pressure loss.

Question: How fast may you drive with a MOExtended tire in emergency operation?

Answer: A maximum of 80 km/h and only for a limited distance to the nearest specialist workshop.
