Tire pressure. Tire pressure monitoring

~6min read

The tire pressure monitoring system of the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation, W212, 2009–2016) constantly monitors the air pressure in the tires and contributes significantly to driving safety. This section explains the functions, warnings and the correct procedure after changing tire pressures or changing tires.

General Notes

The tire pressure monitoring system uses sensors installed in the wheels of the vehicle to monitor the tire pressure in all four tires. If the pressure in one or more tires drops, the tire pressure monitoring system warns you. The system can only function if corresponding sensors are fitted in all wheels.

Tire pressure information is shown in the multifunction display. After driving for a few minutes, the current tire pressure of each wheel appears in the Service menu in the multifunction display, see illustration (example).

Important Safety Notes

The driver is responsible for setting the tire pressure to the recommended value for cold tires that is suitable for the operating conditions for more information. Note that the tire pressure monitoring system must first learn the correct tire pressure for the current operating conditions. The warning threshold for the tire pressure loss warning is based on the learned reference values. After you have set the tire pressure on cold tires, you can restart the tire pressure monitoring system for more information. The current pressures are then stored as new reference values. This ensures that you only receive a warning once the tire pressure has dropped significantly.

The tire pressure monitoring system does not warn you of an incorrectly set tire pressure. Observe the notes on the recommended tire pressure for more information.

The tire pressure monitoring system cannot warn you of a sudden loss of air, for example caused by a penetrating foreign object. In this case, brake the vehicle carefully to a standstill. Do not make any sharp steering movements.

The tire pressure monitoring system has a yellow tire pressure loss/malfunction warning lamp in the instrument cluster. Depending on how the warning lamp flashes or lights up, it indicates either a tire pressure that is too low or a malfunction of the tire pressure monitoring system:

  • If the warning lamp lights up continuously, the tire pressure in one or more tires is significantly too low. The tire pressure monitoring system has no malfunction.
  • If the warning lamp flashes for approx. one minute and then lights up continuously, the tire pressure monitoring system has a malfunction.
In addition to the warning lamp, a message appears in the multifunction display. Observe the information on display messages for more information.

It may take up to ten minutes before a malfunction of the tire pressure monitoring system is indicated. The malfunction is first indicated by the tire pressure warning lamp flashing for approx. one minute and then lighting up. Once the fault has been rectified, the tire pressure warning lamp goes out after a few minutes of driving.

The tire pressure values in the on-board computer may differ from those you measure at a filling station with an air pressure gauge. The tire pressures shown by the on-board computer refer to sea level. At high altitudes, air pressure gauges show a higher tire pressure than the on-board computer. In this case, do not reduce the tire pressure.

If radio transmitting equipment (e.g. wireless headphones, two-way radios) is operated in the vehicle or in its vicinity, this may interfere with the function of the tire pressure monitoring system.

Check tire pressure electronically

Make sure the key is in position 2 in the ignition lock for more information.

Use the buttonsorselect the Service menu on the steering wheel.

Using theorSelect Tire pressure.Press the buttonpress.
  • The multifunction display shows the current tire pressure of each wheel. If the vehicle has been parked for more than 20 minutes, the message Tire pressure display appears after a few minutes of driving appears.

After a teach-in procedure, the tire pressure monitor automatically detects new wheels or new sensors. As long as the pressure values cannot yet be clearly assigned to the wheel positions, the message “Tire pressure monitor active” appears instead of the tire pressure display. The tire pressures are already being monitored.

If the spare wheel is fitted, the system may still display the tire pressure of the removed wheel for a few minutes. If this occurs, note that the value shown at the position of the fitted spare wheel does not correspond to the current tire pressure of the spare wheel.

    Tire pressure monitor warning messages

If the tire pressure monitor detects a pressure loss in one or more tires, a warning message appears in the multifunction display and the yellow Tire Pressure warning light comes on.
    • If the message “Correct tire pressure” appears in the multifunction display, the tire pressure in at least one tire is too low. Inflate the tire(s) to the correct pressure at the next opportunity.
    • If the message “Check tires” appears in the multifunction display, the tire pressure in one or more tires has dropped significantly. The tires must be checked.
    • If the message “Warning: Tire failure” appears in the multifunction display, the tire pressure in one or more tires has suddenly dropped. The tires must be checked.
Be sure to observe the instructions and safety notes for the display messages in the “Tires” section. For more information, refer to that section.

If the wheel positions on the vehicle are changed, the tire pressure may briefly be displayed at the wrong position. This is corrected after driving for a few minutes, and the tire pressure is then displayed at the correct position.

    Restarting the tire pressure monitor

When you restart the tire pressure monitor, all pending warning messages are cleared and the warning light goes out. The currently set tire pressures are adopted as reference values for monitoring. In most cases, the tire pressure monitor automatically detects the new reference values after you change the tire pressure. However, you can also set the reference values manually, as described here. The tire pressure monitor then monitors the new tire pressure values.

Use the tire pressure table on the fuel filler flap to make sure the tire pressure is correctly set for all four wheels for the respective driving situation.

Observe the notes in the Tire Pressure section for more information.

Make sure the key is in position 2 in the ignition lock.

Use the buttonsorselect the Service menu on the steering wheel.

    Using theorSelect Tire pressure.

    Press the buttonpress.

  • The current tire pressure of the individual wheels is shown in the multifunction display, or the message “Tire pressure display” appears after driving for a few minutes.Press the buttonpress.
  • The message “Adopt current pressures as new reference values?” appears in the multifunction display.

If you want to confirm the restart:

    Press the buttonpress.

  • The message “Tire pressure monitor restarted” appears in the multifunction display. After a few minutes of driving, the system checks whether the current tire pressure values are within the specified range. The new tire pressure values are then adopted as reference values and monitored. To cancel the restart:

    Press the buttonpress.

  • The tire pressure values stored at the last restart continue to be monitored.
