Close safely without risk: the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation W212, 2009–2016) protects against injury at the trunk with a reversing function. This section explains how this system works and why your attention remains essential nonetheless.

Important Safety Notes

WARNING

Combustion engines emit toxic exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide. If the trunk lid/tailgate is open while the engine is running, especially while driving, exhaust gases can enter the vehicle interior. There is a risk of poisoning!

Always switch off the engine before opening the trunk lid/tailgate. Never drive with the trunk lid/tailgate open.

NOTE

The trunk lid/tailgate swings up and back when opened. Therefore make sure there is enough space behind and above the trunk lid/tailgate.

Preferably store luggage or cargo in the trunk/cargo area. Observe the loading guidelines.

Do not leave the key in the trunk/cargo area. Otherwise you could lock yourself out.

Sedan without trunk lid comfort closing: You can operate the trunk lid

• open and close manually from outside
• open automatically from outside
• open automatically from inside
• unlock with the emergency key.

Sedan with trunk lid comfort closing: You can operate the trunk lid

• open and close manually from outside
• open and close automatically from outside
• open and close automatically from inside
• unlock with the emergency key.

Estate: You can

• open and close the tailgate manually from outside
• open the tailgate manually from inside (T-model with fold-down rear seat)
• open and close the tailgate automatically from outside
• open and close the tailgate automatically from inside
• limit the opening angle of the tailgate
• unlock the tailgate with the emergency key.

Reversing function of the trunk lid/tailgate

The trunk lid/tailgate is equipped with an automatic reversing function. It responds when a solid object blocks or restricts the trunk lid/tailgate during the closing process. The trunk lid/tailgate then opens automatically again. The automatic reversing function is only an aid and does not replace your attention when closing the trunk/cargo area.

WARNING

The reversing function does not respond

• to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fingers
• in the last 8 mm of the closing travel

As a result, the reversing function cannot prevent pinching in these situations. Risk of injury!

When closing, make sure that no body parts are within the closing area.

If someone becomes trapped,

• press the buttonon the key, or
• pull or press the remote control button on the driver's door, or
• press the close or lock button on the trunk lid/tailgate, or
• pull the handle of the trunk lid/tailgate.

Opening and closing from outside

Open

Press the buttonof the key.

Sedan: At the handlepull.

Lift the trunk lid.

T-model: When you pull the handleand hold it pulled, you can open the tailgate manually. When you release the handle, the tailgate opens automatically.

Locking

Pull down the trunk lid/tailgate at the grip recesspull down.

T-model: Let the tailgate fall shut into the latch.

If necessary, lock the vehicle with the buttonon the key or with KEYLESS-GO to lock.

If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the trunk/cargo area, the trunk lid/tailgate cannot be locked.

Sedan: The trunk lid then opens again.
