To avoid sparking, you must

• Check that the electrical consumers (courtesy lights, etc.) are switched off before disconnecting or connecting the battery.
• While charging, before connecting or disconnecting the battery charger leads to or from the battery terminals, switch off the charger at the mains.
• Make sure no metal objects are placed on the battery. Do not allow a short circuit between the terminals.
• Wait at least one minute after switching off the engine before disconnecting the battery.
• After installation, make sure the battery terminals are correctly connected.

Before any work in the engine compartment, be sure to switch off the engine using the stop button (see the "Starting and stopping the engine" section in Chapter 2).
