ADJUSTMENT

If the steering rack pad is knocking, it is mandatory to check that the pad is correctly adjusted before considering replacement of the steering gear.

1. Confirming the knock

Take hold of the rack bar on the side where the pad is located and check for play across it (up and down). Play followed by a knock indicates a rack pad knock.

2. Adjustment for SMI steering

Unlock the adjusting nut (1) by straightening the staked marks (A) on the nut flange.

Road test to check whether the steering wheel returns to the centre position.

Maximum permitted take-up: 1 notch.

Re-lock the nut in two opposite notches of the housing by bending the nut flange over.
