Removal and installation

PROCEDURE

1. In the engine compartment, remove the clips and washers (indicated by arrows) and disconnect the cables from the shift crank.
2. Remove the cable retainers from the bracket (indicated by arrows) using pliers.
3. Inside the vehicle, remove the shift lever console (see subsection 11.24).
4. Remove the cable retainers from the underside of the shift lever assembly (see figure Shift cables and shift lever assembly (1993-1995 model years) or figure Shift cables and shift lever assembly (1996 model year and later)).
5. Remove the clips and washers from the cable ends (indicated by arrow) and disconnect the cables from the shift lever.
6. Trace the cables to the body bulkhead and remove the sealing grommets. Pull the cables through the bulkhead.
7. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
