Automatic transmission

~1min read

The vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 3- or 4-speed automatic transmission. This section describes automatic transmission service. Manual transmission repair and maintenance procedures are described in the first part of this chapter.
Model A132L is a 3-speed automatic transmission fitted to vehicles with 4E-FE and 4A-FE engines. Shift timing is controlled by the governor and throttle valve position. Model A240L, fitted to vehicles with 4A-FE and 7A-FE engines, is a 4-speed automatic transmission with an overdrive fourth gear. Both transmission models use a torque converter with a lock-up clutch.
Due to the complexity of the automatic transmission and the special equipment required for its repair, this chapter describes only routine maintenance, diagnosis, adjustment, and removal and installation procedures. If the transmission requires major repair, it must be taken to a repair shop. You may remove and install the transmission to reduce costs, but actual repair work should be left to specialists.
