Engine Electrical Equipment

~1min read

The engine electrical system includes the ignition system, the battery charging system and the engine starting system. Because these systems are an integral part of the engine, they are covered separately from body electrical equipment (for example, lighting, instruments, etc.), which is covered in Section 12.
When servicing the electrical system, observe the following precautions:

– Exercise extreme caution when inspecting electrical system parts and components (incorrect connection or improper handling will quickly damage engine electrical devices).
– Do not leave the ignition switched on for more than 10 minutes with the engine not running.
– Never disconnect battery cables while the engine is running.
– When jump starting the engine from another vehicle's battery, observe the battery polarity.
– Always disconnect the battery ground cable first, and connect it last, to prevent the battery from being shorted by the tool used to tighten the terminals.
