The vehicles described in this manual are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 3- or 4-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmission work is described in the first part of this chapter. Repair and maintenance operations for the automatic transmission are described in the second part of this chapter.
The manual transmission and differential are housed in a compact, two-section aluminum alloy case. On models with 1.3 L engine the C150 transmission is fitted, and on models with 1.6 L and 1.8 L engines the C50 or C52 transmission is fitted. All transmission models are practically identical, except for different first gear ratios.
Due to the complexity of repair, lack of spare parts and required special tools, internal repair of the manual transmission is not described in this manual. For those who still wish to attempt to rebuild the transmission themselves, subsection 7.1.6 provides diagrams of the transmission internals and a general description of this operation. Most of the information in this chapter concerns transmission removal and installation.
