Environmental philosophy
The environmental philosophy of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, model years 2013–2016) shows how the vehicle meets strict environmental standards. This section emphasizes environmentally friendly technologies, recycling options and tips for sustainable use in everyday driving.
Your Volvo meets strict international environmental standards and is manufactured with efficient use of resources and low emissions. Volvo Car Corporation continuously works to make its products even safer and more efficient and to further reduce negative environmental impact.
Environmental protection is one of the core values of Volvo Cars and affects all areas of the company. We also believe that our customers share our environmental awareness.
Volvo Cars holds a global ISO certificate covering all factories and several other Volvo units that meet the environmental management standard (ISO 14001). We also require our business partners to work systematically on environmental issues.
Fuel Consumption
Volvo vehicles have competitive fuel consumption within their respective classes. The lower the fuel consumption, the lower the emission of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
As a driver, you can influence fuel consumption. For more information, see the heading "How to Protect the Environment".
Effective Exhaust Gas Cleaning
Your Volvo is built on the principle "Clean inside and out". This means you benefit in two ways: from a clean interior environment and from highly effective exhaust gas cleaning. In many cases, engine emissions are well below the applicable standards.
Clean Air in the Interior
A cabin air filter prevents dust and pollen from entering the interior through the air intake.
A highly developed air purification system, IAQS (Interior Air Quality System)*, ensures that in heavy traffic the air supplied to the interior is cleaner than the outside air.
The system consists of an electronic sensor and a carbon filter. The incoming air is monitored continuously.
As soon as the air contains too many harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide, the air intake is closed. Such a situation can occur, for example, in dense city traffic, in traffic jams or in tunnels.
The carbon filter prevents nitrogen oxides, ground-level ozone and hydrocarbons from entering the interior.
Interior
The interior of a Volvo is adapted to the needs of people with contact allergies and asthma. The use of environmentally friendly materials was particularly important.
Volvo Retailers and the Environment
Regular maintenance creates the conditions for a long service life and low fuel consumption of your vehicle. In this way, you help to keep the environment clean. When you entrust service and maintenance of your vehicle to Volvo workshops, your vehicle becomes part of our system. Volvo sets requirements for the environmentally responsible design of its workshops in order to prevent pollutants and other contaminants. Our workshop personnel have the knowledge and the means to ensure the best possible environmental protection.
How to Protect the Environment
Protecting the environment is easy. Here are some tips:
- Avoid idling the engine. Switch off the engine during longer waiting periods. Observe local regulations.
- Drive economically and anticipate traffic.
- Have the vehicle serviced regularly as described in the Owner's Manual. Observe the intervals recommended in the Service and Warranty Booklet.
- If the vehicle is equipped with an engine block heater*, use it before a cold start. This improves starting performance, reduces wear in cold weather and brings the engine to its normal operating temperature more quickly, which reduces both fuel consumption and emissions.
- High speeds increase fuel consumption considerably, because air resistance rises. When speed doubles, air resistance increases fourfold.
- Dispose of environmentally harmful waste, such as batteries and oil, in an environmentally responsible way.
If you are unsure how to dispose of this type of waste, ask a workshop for advice. A Volvo retailer is recommended.
If you follow these recommendations, you can save money, conserve the earth's resources and extend the service life of the vehicle. For more information and advice, see Eco Guide, Economical Driving and Fuel Consumption.
Recycling
Part of Volvo's environmental work is recycling the vehicle in an environmentally correct manner. Almost the entire vehicle is recyclable. We therefore ask the last owner of the vehicle to contact a dealer to obtain a recommendation for a certified/approved recycling facility.
