Data recording. Accessories and optional equipment
The Volvo S80 (2nd generation, model years 2013–2016) stores certain vehicle data to improve quality and safety. This section explains which data is recorded and how it is used to support maintenance, research and compliance with legal requirements.
Data recording
Certain information about the operation and functionality of the vehicle, and possibly
Hazardous situations are recorded in the vehicle.
Your vehicle has a number of computers whose task is to continuously control and monitor the operation and functionality of the vehicle. Some of these computers can record data during normal driving if they detect a malfunction.
Data is also recorded in the event of a collision or near-collision. Some of the recorded data is required so that technicians can diagnose and repair any faults in the vehicle during maintenance and service, and so that Volvo can comply with legal requirements and other regulations.
In addition, Volvo uses the data for research purposes aimed at continuously improving quality and safety. The data can help achieve a better understanding of the circumstances that lead to accidents and injuries.
The data may include information on the condition and functionality of various systems and components in the vehicle, including the engine, throttle valves, steering and brake system. This data may include information on how the driver operates the vehicle. This includes, for example, vehicle speed, use of the brake or accelerator pedal, steering wheel angle, and whether the driver or front passenger were wearing their seat belts. For the reasons stated, the data may be stored in the vehicle computers for a certain period of time, and also as a result of a collision or near-collision.
Volvo may store the data for as long as it can contribute to improving safety and quality, and for as long as legal requirements and other regulations that Volvo must observe remain in effect.
Volvo generally does not pass on the data described above to third parties without the vehicle owner's permission. However, Volvo may be legally required to release such data to authorities, such as the police, or to others who assert their right of access to the data.
Special technical equipment and tools are required to read out and evaluate the data recorded by the vehicle's computers. Both Volvo and workshops contracted with Volvo have access to this equipment. Volvo is responsible for ensuring that data transmitted to Volvo in connection with service and maintenance is stored and handled securely, and that this handling complies with applicable legal requirements.

Accessories and additional equipment
Incorrect connection or incorrect installation of accessories and additional equipment can adversely affect the vehicle's electrical system.
Certain accessories only work if the vehicle's computer system has the corresponding software. Volvo therefore recommends that you always contact a Volvo authorized workshop before installing any accessories or additional equipment that are connected to or affect the electrical system.
Heat-reflecting windshield*
The windshield is fitted with a heat-reflecting film (IR) that reduces the amount of solar heat entering the interior.
Mounting electronic equipment, such as a transponder, behind a glass surface fitted with a heat-reflecting film may impair the function and performance of the equipment.
For optimal function of electronic equipment, it should be placed in the part of the windshield that is not fitted with a heat-reflecting film (see the marked area in the illustration).
* Option/accessory. For more information, see "Introduction".

Area without IR film.
A is the distance from the upper edge of the windshield to the start of the area. B is the distance from the upper edge of the windshield to the end of the area.
