Fuel Pump Relay Check

GENERAL INFORMATION

The fuel pump relay is located in the relay board, position 4, on the driver's side under the instrument panel assembly. Check it if the pump does not run.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove fuel pump fuse No. 28.

2. Connect a diode test lamp with an auxiliary wire between ground and one of the two contacts of the fuel pump fuse.

3. Remove the lower trim panel at the driver's footwell on the left, refer to Removal and Installation of Driver Side Pocket.

4. Engage the starter. The fuel pump relay must be heard to click. In addition, the diode test lamp must light up.

5. If the relay does not engage, check the supply voltage and the control circuit.

6. If the diode test lamp does not light up although the relay engages, repeat the check on the other fuse contact.

7. If the diode test lamp still does not light up, check the wire between contact 23 at the relay, position 4, and the fuel pump fuse. If there is an open circuit, repair it.

8. If the relay supply, control, and relay wiring are correct, replace the fuel pump relay. Power Supply Check

Remove the fuel pump relay from the relay board (relay position No. 4). Switch the ignition on. Connect a voltmeter in turn:

– between contact 19 (ignition switch positive) and ground; – between contact 17 (battery positive) and ground.

Required value: 12 V (battery voltage).

If not, check the wire for an open circuit using the wiring diagram and repair it. Switch the ignition off. CONTROL CHECK

PROCEDURE

1. Connect a diode test lamp with an auxiliary wire between contact 16 (control ground from the engine control module) and contact 17 (positive) of the relay socket.

2. Engage the starter. The LED must light up. If it does not, locate the open circuit in the wire to the injection control unit and repair it, or replace the control unit (work to be performed at a dealer service station).

CAUTION

Diode test lamps have low current consumption. If the starter is not engaged, they glow dimly and do not go out completely.

3. Install the fuel pump fuse.

4. Install the pocket at the footwell area, refer to Removal and Installation of Driver Side Pocket.
