Operating instructions
Towing a trailer is subject to certain rules.
- Observe the permitted towing loads.
Towing load
You must never exceed the permitted towing load.
If you do not use the maximum permitted load, you can climb steeper gradients.
The specified towing loads apply only at altitudes not exceeding 1,000 m above sea level. The higher the altitude, the lower the engine output and gradient capability due to decreasing air density, and the lower the permitted towing load. Reduce the combined weight by 10 % for every additional 1,000 m. The combined weight is the sum of the (loaded) vehicle weight and the (loaded) trailer weight.
The drawbar nose weight shown on the towing device manufacturer's plate is only a check value for the device.
The vehicle data are often below the check values and are recorded in the vehicle documents. Please also observe the notes.
Load distribution
Distribute the load in the trailer, making sure to place heavy objects as close as possible to the axle. Secure the objects to prevent them from sliding.
We recommend making full use of the permissible nose weight on the towball, but do not exceed it.
Tire pressure
Select the tyre inflation pressure for "full load"; see the sticker on the door pillar. If necessary, also correct the tyre inflation pressure of the trailer, in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
Exterior mirrors
If the mirrors fitted as standard on your car do not provide perfect visibility and do not allow you to observe traffic behind the trailer, you must fit additional mirrors. Both mirrors must be mounted on foldable arms. Adjust them to provide good rear visibility.
Headlights
Before starting off with the trailer attached, also check the headlight adjustment. If necessary, change the setting using the headlight range control; see
Power supply
To cut off the power supply to the towing device, remove the ignition key.
Removable towball
Vehicles equipped with a towing device at the factory have a removable towball. You will find it, together with its Owner's Manual, in the spare wheel well in the luggage compartment of the vehicle.

If you tow a trailer frequently, we recommend having your car serviced even between the prescribed service intervals.
