Checking the coolant level

~1min read

A quick look at the expansion tank is sufficient to check the coolant level.

  • Switch off the ignition.
  • Check the coolant level on the coolant expansion tank => fig. 224. It must be between the “min” and “max” marks when the engine is cold. When the engine is warm, the level may be slightly above the “max” mark.

The installation location of the coolant expansion tank can also be seen in the illustration of the engine compartment.

The coolant level can only be checked when the engine is switched off.

A warning light in the instrument cluster display monitors the coolant level => page 30. However, it is recommended to check the level from time to time.

Coolant loss

Coolant loss can primarily only be caused by a leak. In this case, have the cooling system checked immediately by a specialist workshop.

If the system is sealed, losses can only occur if the coolant boils due to overheating. The coolant is then expelled from the cooling system.

Warning!

Do not mix radiator sealant with coolant, as it endangers the function of the cooling system.
