Coolant

~2min read

The coolant provides cooling for the engine. The antifreeze protection of the coolant is determined in winter by the proportion of additive.

The cooling system of your vehicle was filled at the factory with a long-life coolant that does not need to be drained. The coolant consists of water and G12+ additive.

It is a glycol-based antifreeze containing anti-corrosion additives.

Additive

The proportion of additive depends on the climatic conditions in which you use the vehicle. If the proportion of additive is too low, the coolant may freeze and impair the function of the cooling system and the heater.

The proportion of additive is determined at the factory according to the climatic conditions in which the vehicle is used.

Normally, the coolant consists of a mixture of 60% water and 40% additive. This mixture not only provides the necessary antifreeze protection down to -25 °C, but above all protects the metal parts of the cooling system against corrosion. It also prevents scaling and significantly raises the boiling point of the coolant.

Hot countries

Never reduce the concentration of the coolant by adding water during the warm season or in hot countries. The coolant must contain at least 40% additive.

Cold countries

If greater antifreeze protection is required for climatic reasons, the proportion of G12+ additive can be increased. A concentration of 60% provides antifreeze protection down to approximately -40 °C. However, the concentration must not exceed 60%, otherwise antifreeze protection decreases. Cooling is also less efficient.

Vehicles intended for cold countries (e.g. Sweden, Norway, Finland) are filled at the factory with a coolant that provides antifreeze protection down to -35 °C. In these countries, the proportion of additive must be at least 50%.

Warning!

  • Before winter, have the antifreeze concentration checked to confirm it is suitable for the climatic conditions of the region in which you use the vehicle. This applies especially if you travel to a colder region. In cold countries, the antifreeze concentration must be 50% to 60%. Adjust it if necessary to suit the climatic conditions.
  • Use only G12+ additive or an additive that meets the specification “TL-VW 774 F”. Other additives can significantly impair corrosion protection. Rust damage can cause coolant loss and thus lead to severe engine damage.
  • G12+ additive can be mixed with other additives (G 11 and G12).
