Valve Removal and Installation
All Models
* If valve train components will be reused, they must be installed in their original positions. To avoid errors, store the parts properly.
REMOVAL
1. Remove the cylinder head; refer to the Intake Manifold Removal and Installation and Cylinder Head Removal and Installation sections.
2. Remove the camshaft; refer to the Camshaft Removal and Installation section.
3. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve collets. A standard valve spring compressor may be used. Refer to the accompanying illustration.

4. Release the spring and remove the upper retainer, the spring and the lower retainer.
5. Using special pliers, remove the valve stem seal. Tool 791-5 or puller 791-2 HAZET may be used for this purpose. The illustration shows the BMW tool. Refer to the accompanying illustration.

6. Remove the valve from the cylinder head from the combustion chamber side.
7. Remove the next valve.
Installation
Before installing the valves, inspect the guides. If necessary, lap the valve seats; refer to the Cylinder Head Valve Seat Machining/Valve Lapping section.

Installation sequence:
1 - valve,
2 - valve stem seal,
3 - lower retainer,
4 - valve spring,
5 - upper retainer,
6 - valve collets.
INSTALLATION
1. Remove sharp edges from the contact surface of the valve collets.
2. Lightly lubricate the valve stem and guide with engine oil and insert the valve.
3. Lightly lubricate the valve stem seal (1) with oil and install it with the appropriate installer until it bottoms out. Refer to the accompanying illustration.

* To avoid damaging the valve stem seals, install the installation sleeve (2) (BMW 11 1 960) over the valve stem before installing the seal. If no sleeve is available, wrap the stem with adhesive tape at the collet contact surfaces. Remove the tape after the seal is installed.
4. Install the lower retainer, then the spring. Replace any damaged parts.
5. Install the upper retainer.
6. Compress the spring with the tool and install the valve collets. Slowly release the spring while checking the position of the collets.
7. Install the next valve. Do not mix up the intake and exhaust valves.
8. Install the cylinder head; refer to the Intake Manifold Removal and Installation and Cylinder Head Removal and Installation sections.
