Operating the manual gearbox
When engaging gears, press the clutch pedal fully down and move the gear lever into the desired position (the gear pattern is on the gear lever knob, fig. 2 and fig. 3).
To engage 6th gear (1.4 16V, 1.4 T-Jet and 1.9 Multijet 16V versions), move the lever to the right with light pressure to avoid accidentally engaging 4th gear. Proceed similarly when downshifting from 6th to 5th gear.
Note: Reverse gear can only be engaged when the vehicle is completely stationary. With the engine running, wait at least 2 seconds with the clutch pedal pressed before engaging reverse, to avoid damage to the gear wheels and gear-shift noise.
To engage reverse gear R from neutral, lift the ring A-fig. 2 or A-fig. 3 from below and at the same time move the lever to the right and then towards the rear.

NoteCorrect operation of the gearbox requires the clutch pedal to be fully depressed. The floor area under the pedals must therefore be free of obstructions. Make sure any additional floor mats lie flat and do not come into contact with the pedals.

Do not keep your hand on the gear lever while driving; the force applied in this way, although slight, can over time wear the internal gear-shift components.
