Maintenance and care

Engine oil

~6min read

Check the engine oil level with the vehicle on level ground, a few minutes (about 5) after the engine has been switched off.

Check that the oil level is between the MIN and MAX marks on dipstick B. If the oil level is near or below the MIN mark, add oil through filler cap A until the MAX mark is reached.

NOTE On 0.9 TwinAir and 0.9 TwinAir Turbo versions, dipstick B is integral with cap A. To check the oil level, unscrew the cap, clean the dipstick with a lint-free cloth, reinsert it and screw the cap back on.

Unscrew the cap a second time and check that the engine oil level is between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.

Engine oil consumption

As a guide, maximum engine oil consumption is 400 grams every 1000 km. During the initial period of use, engine oil consumption can be considered stable only after the first 5000 ÷ 6000 km.

Engine oil top-up (for TwinAir engines)

If the message requesting an engine oil top-up appears on the display, after topping up the oil to the MAX level, the user must perform the warning reset procedure from the instrument cluster as described in the "Display" section of the chapter "Instrument cluster".

NOTE After adding or replacing the oil, run the engine for a few seconds and wait a few minutes after switching it off before checking the level.

Engine coolant

The coolant level must be checked with the engine cold and must be between the MIN and MAX marks visible on the reservoir.

If the level is low, unscrew cap C of the reservoir and add the coolant described in the chapter "Technical data".

Windshield/rear window washer fluid

If the level is low, lift cap D of the reservoir (see previous pages) and add the fluid described in the chapter "Technical data".

Brake fluid

Check that the fluid is at the maximum level (the fluid level must never exceed the MAX mark). If the fluid level in the reservoir is low, unscrew cap E of the reservoir and add the fluid described in the chapter "Technical data".

Dualogic gearbox actuation hydraulic system oil

For checking the oil level, contact only the Fiat Service Network.

Battery F does not require topping up the electrolyte with distilled water.

Periodic checks by the Fiat Service Network are still necessary to verify its efficiency.

WARNING After disconnecting the battery, the steering requires initialisation, which is indicated by the warning light coming onon the instrument cluster. To carry out this procedure, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock or simply drive straight ahead for about one hundred metres.

WARNING A battery kept for a long time at a state of charge below 50% will be damaged by sulphation, reducing its capacity and starting ability.

Air conditioning system maintenance

During the winter season, run the air conditioning system at least once a month for about 10 minutes. Before the summer season, have the efficiency of the system checked by the Fiat Service Network.

WARNING 159) Never smoke during any work in the engine compartment: flammable gases and vapours may be present, with the risk of fire.

160) With the engine hot, work with great care inside the engine compartment: risk of burns.

161) The cooling system is pressurised. If the cap needs replacing, use only another genuine cap, or the efficiency of the system may be compromised. With the engine hot, do not remove the reservoir cap: risk of burns.

162) Do not drive with the washer fluid reservoir empty: washer operation is essential for improving visibility.

Some commercial windshield washer additives are flammable. The engine compartment contains hot parts that could ignite them on contact.

163) Brake fluid is poisonous and highly corrosive. In case of accidental contact, immediately wash the affected parts with water and neutral soap, then rinse thoroughly. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

164) The symbol, shown on the container, identifies synthetic brake fluids, distinguishing them from mineral-based ones. Using mineral-based fluids irreparably damages the special rubber seals of the brake system.

165) The fluid contained in the battery is poisonous and corrosive. Avoid contact with skin or eyes. Do not approach the battery with naked flames or possible sources of sparks: risk of explosion and fire.

166) Operating the battery with the fluid level too low irreparably damages it and may even cause it to explode.

167) If the vehicle must remain stationary for a long time in severe cold, remove the battery and take it to a heated place, otherwise there is a risk that it will freeze.

168) When working on or near the battery, always protect your eyes with suitable goggles. WARNING 58) Be careful not to confuse the different types of fluid when topping up: they are all incompatible with each other! Topping up with an unsuitable fluid may seriously damage the vehicle.

59) The oil level must never exceed the MAX mark.

60) Do not add oil with different specifications from the oil already in the engine.

61) The engine cooling system uses PARAFLU UP antifreeze coolant. For topping up, use the same type of coolant already in the cooling system. PARAFLU UP must not be mixed with any other type of coolant. If this occurs, do not start the engine under any circumstances and contact the Fiat Service Network.

62) Keep the highly corrosive brake fluid away from painted surfaces. If contact occurs, wash immediately with water.

63) Incorrect installation of electrical and electronic accessories may cause serious damage to the vehicle. If you wish to install accessories after purchasing the vehicle (anti-theft device, radio telephone, etc.), contact the Fiat Service Network, which will advise you on the most suitable devices and, above all, on whether a battery with higher capacity is necessary. WARNING 3) Used engine oil and the replaced oil filter contain substances hazardous to the environment. For oil and filter replacement, we recommend contacting the Fiat Service Network.

4) Used transmission oil contains substances that are harmful to the environment. For oil replacement, we recommend contacting the Fiat Service Network, which is equipped to dispose of used oil in an environmentally responsible manner and in compliance with the law.

5) Batteries contain substances that are highly hazardous to the environment. For battery replacement, contact the Fiat Service Network.

Brakes

Depending on version/market, the vehicle may be fitted with mechanical brake pad wear indicators: one for each wheel group.

When the brake pads are close to wearing out, pressing the brake pedal produces a slight squeal. This warning lasts for about 100 km (the mileage varies depending on driving style and route).

In these cases, it is still possible to continue driving, with caution.

However, contact the Fiat Service Network as soon as possible to replace the worn brake pads.
