Parking sensors

~3min read

Sensors

The sensors, located in the rear bumper fig. 89, detect the presence of any obstacles near the rear of the vehicle and warn the driver with an intermittent audible signal.

Activation/deactivation

The sensors activate automatically when reverse gear is engaged. As the distance to an obstacle behind the vehicle decreases, the frequency of the audible signal increases.

Operation with trailer

Sensor operation is automatically deactivated when the trailer cable plug is inserted into the vehicle's towing hitch socket. The sensors reactivate automatically when the trailer cable plug is removed.

General information

During parking manoeuvres, always pay close attention to obstacles that may be above or below the sensor.

Objects located at close range may in some circumstances not be detected by the system and may therefore damage the vehicle or be damaged.

The following conditions may affect the performance of the parking system:

  • the presence of ice, snow, mud or multiple paint layers on the sensor surface may reduce the sensitivity of the sensor and the performance of the system;
  • the presence of mechanical disturbances (for example: vehicle washing, rain, extreme wind conditions, hail) may cause the sensor to detect an object that does not exist ("echo interference");
  • the presence of ultrasonic systems (for example pneumatic brakes on lorries or pneumatic hammers) near the vehicle may alter the signals sent to the sensor;
  • changes in sensor position, caused for example by altered suspension settings (due to wear of shock absorbers or suspension), by tyre replacement, by vehicle overloading, or by specific settings that lower the vehicle, may affect the performance of the parking sensor system;
  • the presence of the towing hitch when no trailer is attached interferes with the correct operation of the parking sensors. Installing a fixed towing hitch makes it impossible to use the sensors. If the customer intends to install a detachable towing hitch, it is recommended to detach it from the crossmember in all cases where no trailer is attached, to prevent the sensors from activating.
WARNING 127) The driver is always responsible for parking and other potentially dangerous manoeuvres. When carrying out these manoeuvres, always make sure that there are no people (especially children) or animals in the manoeuvring area. The parking sensors are an aid for the driver, who must never reduce attention during potentially dangerous manoeuvres, even when performed at low speed. WARNING 47) For correct system operation, the sensors must always be kept clean of mud, dirt, snow or ice. When cleaning the sensors, take great care not to scratch or damage them; avoid using dry, rough or hard cloths. The sensors must be washed with clean water, optionally with car shampoo added. At car washes that use steam jet or high-pressure cleaners, clean the sensors quickly, keeping the nozzle more than 10 cm away.
