iTPMS (indirect Tyre Pressure Monitoring System)

~7min read

(depending on version/market, where fitted)

The vehicle may be equipped with the tyre pressure monitoring system called iTPMS (indirect Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), which uses the wheel speed sensors to monitor the inflation status of the tyres.

The system warns the driver if one or more tyres are underinflated, by the steady illumination of the warning lighton the instrument cluster and the display of a dedicated warning message.

If only one tyre is underinflated, the system may be able to indicate its position; however, it is recommended to check the pressure of all four tyres.

This warning is also displayed after the engine is switched off and then restarted, until the RESET procedure is carried out.

Reset procedure

The iTPMS system requires an initial "self-learning" phase (its duration depends on driving style and road conditions; the optimal condition is driving straight at 80 km/h for at least 20 min), which starts by performing the Reset procedure.

The Reset procedure must be carried out:

  • every time the tyre pressure is changed;

  • whenever even just one tyre is replaced;

  • whenever the tyres are rotated/swapped;

  • whenever the temporary spare wheel is fitted.

    Before performing the Reset, inflate the tyres to the nominal pressure values shown in the tyre pressure table (see the description in the "Wheels" section of the "Technical specifications" chapter).

    If the Reset is not performed in all the cases listed above, the warning lightmay give false warnings for one or more tyres.

    To perform the RESET, with the vehicle stationary and the starter device in the MAR position, use the Main Menu as follows:

  • press the buttonshort press: the display shows the word Reset;

  • press the buttonorto make the selection ("Yes" or "No");

  • press the buttonshort press: the display shows the message "Confirm";

  • press the buttonorto make the selection ("Yes" to perform the Reset or "No" to exit the screen);

  • press the button againwith a long press to return to the standard screen or to the main menu, depending on where you are in the menu.

Once the Reset procedure is completed, the message "Reset saved" will appear on the display, indicating that self-learning has started.

Operating conditions

The system is active at speeds above 15 km/h.

In some situations, such as sporty driving or particular road surface conditions (e.g. ice, snow, unpaved road...), the warning may be delayed or only partial when detecting simultaneous deflation of several tyres.

In particular conditions (e.g. vehicle loaded asymmetrically on one side, towing a trailer, damaged or worn tyre, use of the temporary spare wheel, use of the "Fix&Go" kit, use of snow chains, use of different tyres on the same axle), the system may give false warnings or temporarily deactivate.

If the system is temporarily deactivated, the warning lightwill flash for about 75 seconds and then remain steadily on; at the same time, a dedicated message will appear on the display.

This warning is also displayed after the engine is switched off and then restarted, if the correct operating conditions have not been restored.

WARNING 67) The system is a driving aid: the driver must never reduce attention while driving. Responsibility for driving always remains with the driver, who must take traffic conditions into account in order to drive safely. The driver must always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

68) If, during system intervention, the driver fully depresses the accelerator pedal or makes a quick steering manoeuvre, the automatic braking function may be interrupted (for example, to allow an evasive manoeuvre to avoid an obstacle).

69) The laser beam is not visible to the naked eye. Do not look directly at the laser beam, or at it using optical instruments (such as lenses), from a distance of less than 10 cm: this may cause eye damage. The laser beam is also present when the key is in the ON position but the function is switched off, unavailable or has been manually deactivated via the display Setup menu.

70) The system intervenes on vehicles travelling in your own lane.

However, small vehicles (for example bicycles, motorcycles), people, animals and objects (for example prams) are not detected, nor are generally any obstacles that reflect little of the emitted laser light (for example vehicles covered in mud).

71) If the vehicle must be positioned on a roller test bench for maintenance (at a speed between 5 and 30 km/h) or if it is washed in an automatic roller car wash, with an obstacle in front (for example another vehicle, a wall or another obstacle), the system may detect it and intervene. In this case, it is therefore necessary to deactivate the system using the display Setup menu.

72) If the system signals a pressure drop in a specific tyre, it is recommended to check the pressure in all four tyres.

73) The iTPMS does not relieve the driver of the obligation to check tyre pressure every month; it must not be considered a substitute for maintenance or safety checks.

74) Tyre pressure must be checked when the tyres are cold. If, for any reason, the pressure is checked when the tyres are warm, do not reduce the pressure even if it is higher than the specified value; instead, repeat the check when the tyres have cooled down.

75) The iTPMS is not able to detect sudden tyre pressure losses (for example a tyre blowout). In this case, stop the vehicle by braking carefully and without making sudden steering movements.

76) The system only provides a low tyre pressure warning: it is not able to inflate the tyres.

77) Insufficient tyre inflation increases fuel consumption, reduces tread life and may affect the ability to drive the vehicle safely. WARNING 30) The laser sensor may have limited or no function due to atmospheric conditions, such as heavy rain, hail, dense fog, heavy snow, or ice build-up on the windscreen.

31) The sensor's performance may also be affected by dust, condensation, dirt or ice on the windscreen, by traffic conditions (for example vehicles travelling out of line with your vehicle, vehicles crossing transversely or travelling in the opposite direction in the same lane, bends with a small radius), by road surface conditions and by driving conditions (for example off-road driving). Always make sure the windscreen is kept clean. To avoid scratching the windscreen, use specific cleaners and clean cloths. In addition, sensor performance may be limited or absent in some driving, traffic and road conditions.

32) Protruding loads placed on the vehicle roof may interfere with correct operation of the sensor.

Before setting off, make sure the load is properly secured so that it does not cover the sensor's field of action.

33) If the windscreen needs to be replaced due to scratches, chips or breakage, contact only the Fiat Service Network. Do not replace the windscreen yourself, as this creates a risk of malfunction! In any case, it is recommended to replace the windscreen if it is damaged in the area of the laser sensor. 34) Do not tamper with or carry out any work on the laser sensor. Do not block the openings in the trim cover located under the interior rear view mirror. If the sensor malfunctions, contact the Fiat Service Network. 35) Do not cover the sensor's field of action with stickers or other objects. Also pay attention to objects on the bonnet of the vehicle (for example a layer of snow) and make sure they do not interfere with the light emitted by the laser. 36) When towing a trailer or when the vehicle is being towed, deactivate the system using the display Setup menu.
