Disconnecting the leads
After the engine has started, disconnect the leads in the following order:
- disconnect the negative (-) jump lead clamp from the earthing point on the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery;
- disconnect the negative (-) jump lead clamp from the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery;
- disconnect the positive (+) jump lead clamp from the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery;
- disconnect the positive (+) jump lead clamp from the positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery.
If the vehicle needs to be jump started frequently, have the battery and charging system checked at an authorised Fiat dealer.
WARNING Accessories (e.g. mobile phones) connected to the vehicle's power sockets discharge the battery even when they are switched off.
If they remain connected for a long time with the engine off, the battery may discharge to a level that shortens its service life and/or prevents the engine from starting.
CAUTION
142) This type of procedure should be carried out by a specialist, as an incorrect procedure may cause a high-intensity short circuit. In addition, the battery electrolyte is poisonous and corrosive, so avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not approach the battery with an open flame or a lit cigarette, and do not cause sparks.
143) Remove all metal objects (e.g. rings, watches, bracelets) that could cause an accidental short circuit and consequently serious personal injury.
43) Do not connect the lead to the negative (-) terminal of the discharged battery.
The resulting electrical spark may cause the battery to explode and cause serious personal injury. Use only the designated earthing point, not any point on exposed metal components.
44) Never use a battery charger to start the engine in an emergency: this may damage the electronic systems and the engine ignition and fuel control units.
