Depower

  1. Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
  2. Determine if an SRS malfunction is present. Turn the ignition OFF and wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition ON and observe the airbag indicator. The airbag warning indicator remains on continuously for approximately 6 seconds, then turns off. Continue to observe the airbag warning indicator for approximately 30 seconds, as this is the time required for the RCM to complete the SRS tests.
    • If an SRS fault is present, the airbag warning lamp does not illuminate, remains on continuously, or flashes. Flashing may not occur until approximately 30 seconds after turning the ignition from OFF to ON. If this occurs, diagnose and repair all SRS faults before proceeding with any other repairs.
    • If the airbag warning indicator does not illuminate without a chime after turning the ignition ON, or an SRS message is not displayed in the message center within 30 seconds, there is no SRS fault.
    • If the airbag warning indicator does not function and an SRS fault is present, a chime sequence of 5 sets of 5 beeps sounds or a message is displayed in the message center. In this case, diagnose and repair the airbag indicator and any SRS faults before proceeding with any other repairs.

No SRS Fault (airbag indicator remains off with ignition ON after inspection)

  1. Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute before continuing vehicle service.

SRS Fault Present

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Remove the RCM fuse or, if equipped, the BECMB fuse(s). Refer to Wiring Diagram Cell 11/Section 700-01 for fuse and relay information.
  3. For a vehicle equipped with a 3-pin BECMB/GWM fuse, install the 2-pin fuse. Install the 10 A fuse in the GWM position so the scan tool can communicate with the vehicle network.
  4. Turn the ignition on.
  5. Using the diagnostic scan tool, perform the network test. Make sure the RCM and, if equipped, the BECMB do not respond to the network test. If the RCM or BECMB passes the network test, remove the correct RCM or BECMB fuse and repeat the network test to verify before proceeding.
  6. Turn the ignition OFF.
  7. Disconnect the battery.
Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).
  8. Wait at least one minute before continuing vehicle service.
