Steering
Electric power steering
Your vehicle is equipped with an electric power steering system. There is no fluid reservoir and no required maintenance.
If your vehicle loses electrical power while you are driving, electric power steering assist is lost. The steering system still works and you can steer your vehicle manually. Manual steering requires more effort.
Extreme continuous steering may increase the effort required to steer your vehicle. This increased effort prevents overheating and permanent damage to the steering system. You do not lose the ability to steer the vehicle manually. Normal steering and driving maneuvers allow the system to cool down and return to normal operation.
If the steering wheel wobbles or pulls, check the following:
- Correct tire pressure.
- Uneven tire wear.
- Loose or worn suspension components.
- Loose or worn steering components.
- Incorrect vehicle alignment.
Adaptive Learning (if equipped)
The electronic power steering system uses adaptive learning to help correct road irregularities and improve overall handling and steering feel. It communicates with the brake system to help operate the Electronic Stability Control and Crash Avoidance systems. In addition, whenever the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, you must drive your vehicle a short distance so the system relearns its strategy and reactivates all systems.
