Batteries normally produce explosive gases that can cause injury. Therefore, keep flames, sparks and flammable materials away from the battery. When working near the battery, always protect your face and eyes. Make sure ventilation is always adequate.

Keep batteries out of the reach of children. Batteries contain sulphuric acid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. When working near the battery, protect your eyes from possible splashes of acid solution. If acid comes into contact with skin or eyes, flush immediately with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention straight away. If acid is swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Preparing the vehicle

Note: Only use a 12-volt power source to start the vehicle.

Note: do not disconnect the battery of a vehicle with a flat battery, otherwise damage to the vehicle's electrical system may occur.
  1. Park the second vehicle used for the jump start near the bonnet of the vehicle with the flat battery, making sure the two vehicles do not touch each other. Apply the parking brake on both vehicles and keep a safe distance from the engine cooling fan, as well as from other moving parts.
  2. Check all battery terminals and remove any corrosion before connecting the battery cables. Make sure the vent caps are secure and aligned.
  3. Switch on the heater fan on both vehicles to avoid current surges. Switch off all other electrical consumers.
