Starting a Gasoline Engine
When you start the engine, the engine speed increases. This warms up the engine. If the engine idle speed does not decrease automatically, have the vehicle checked by an authorised dealer.
Note: You can crank the engine for 60 seconds in total (without the engine starting) before the starting system is temporarily disabled.
The 60 seconds do not have to be consecutive. For example, if you crank the engine three times for 20 seconds each, without the engine starting, you have reached the 60-second time limit. A message appears on the information display each time you exceed the cranking time to warn you. You cannot start the engine again for at least 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes, you are limited to an engine cranking time of 15 seconds. You must wait 60 minutes before you can crank the engine again for 60 seconds.
Before starting your vehicle, check the following:
- Make sure all occupants have fastened their seat belts.
- Make sure all lights and electrical accessories are switched off.
- Make sure the parking brake is applied.
- Place the gear selector lever in a low gear (manual transmission) or in Park (P) (automatic transmission).
- Turn the ignition key to position II. If the vehicle has a keyless ignition system, follow the instructions below.
Vehicles with ignition key
Note: do not press the accelerator pedal.
- Fully depress the brake pedal. If the vehicle has a manual transmission, also fully depress the clutch pedal.
- Turn the key to position III to start the engine. Release the key when the engine starts.
Note: The engine may take up to 15 seconds to start. Note: If the engine does not start on the first attempt, wait a moment and try again.
Vehicles with keyless start
Note: do not press the accelerator pedal. Note: The smart access key must be inside the vehicle in order to leave Park (P).
- Fully depress the clutch pedal (manual transmission) or the brake pedal (automatic transmission).
- Press the button.
Note: On hybrid vehicles, the green indicator light comes on to show that the vehicle is ready to drive. As this vehicle has a silent start system, the engine may not start at the same time as the vehicle.
See Hybrid Electric Vehicle (page 142).
The system does not work if:
- Key frequencies are being jammed.
- The key battery is flat.
If you cannot start the vehicle, proceed as follows:

- Locate the emergency slot in the centre console compartment.
- With the buttons facing the rear of the vehicle and the key fob facing up, insert the key into the emergency slot.
- Once the key is in the correct position, press the clutch pedal (manual transmission) or the brake pedal (automatic transmission), then press the button to start your vehicle.
Quick restart
The quick restart function allows you to restart the engine within 20 seconds of switching it off, even if no valid key is present.
Within 20 seconds of switching off the engine, depress the brake pedal and press the button. Once the 20-second period has elapsed, you cannot restart the vehicle if the key is not inside the vehicle.
Once the vehicle has started, it stays on until you press the button, even if the system does not detect a valid key.
If you open or close a door while the vehicle is moving, the system searches for a valid key. You cannot restart the engine if the system does not detect a valid key within 20 seconds.
Auto stop
This function automatically stops the vehicle if it has been idling for an extended period. The ignition is also switched off to save the battery. Before the vehicle stops, a message appears on the information display with a 30-second countdown. If you do not take any action within 30 seconds, the vehicle stops. Another message appears on the information display to indicate that the vehicle has stopped to save fuel. Start the vehicle normally.
Cancelling auto stop
Note: you cannot permanently disable the auto stop function. When you disable it temporarily, it reactivates at the next start cycle.
You can cancel the auto stop or reset the countdown at any time before the 30 seconds have elapsed by doing the following:
- You can reset the countdown by interacting with the vehicle (for example, by depressing the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal).
- You can temporarily disable the auto stop function when the ignition is switched on (for the current start cycle only).
Stopping the vehicle when stationary
Vehicles with ignition key
- Place the gear selector lever in a low gear (manual transmission) or in Park (P) (automatic transmission).
- Turn the key to position 0.
- Apply the parking brake.
Vehicles with keyless start
- Place the gear selector lever in a low gear (manual transmission) or in Park (P) (automatic transmission).
- Press the button once.
- Apply the parking brake
Note: This turns off the ignition, all electrical circuits, warning lamps and indicators. Note: If the engine idles for 30 minutes, the ignition turns off and the engine stops automatically.
Switching Off the Engine While the Vehicle Is Moving
WARNING
Stopping the engine while the vehicle is still moving can reduce braking and power steering assistance. The steering is not locked, but more effort is required. When the ignition is switched off, some electrical circuits may also be switched off, including the airbags and some warning lamps and indicators. If the ignition was switched off by accident, shift to neutral (N) and restart the engine.
Vehicles with ignition key
- Shift the gear selector lever to neutral (manual transmission) or Neutral (N) (automatic transmission) and use the brakes to stop the vehicle safely.
- Once the vehicle has stopped, shift the gear selector lever to a low gear (manual transmission) or Park (P) (automatic transmission) and turn the key to 0.
- Apply the parking brake.
Vehicles with keyless start
- Shift the gear selector lever to neutral (manual transmission) or Neutral (N) (automatic transmission) and use the brakes to stop the vehicle safely.
- Once the vehicle has stopped, shift the gear selector lever to a low gear (manual transmission) or Park (P) (automatic transmission).
- Press and hold the button for one second, or press it three times within two seconds.
- Apply the parking brake.
Exhaust Gas Protection
WARNING
If you smell exhaust gas inside the vehicle, have it checked immediately by your authorized dealer. Do not drive the vehicle if you smell exhaust gas. Exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide.
Take the necessary precautions to avoid its harmful effects.
Important Ventilation Information
If you stop the vehicle and leave the engine idling for an extended period, we recommend that you follow one of the instructions below:
- Open a window at least 2.5 cm (1 in).
- Set the climate control to outside air.
