Defensive driving means "always expect the unexpected." The first step in safe driving is to wear your seat belt. See Seat Belts.

  • Assume that other road users (pedestrians, cyclists, other drivers, etc.) will be inattentive and make mistakes. Anticipate what they may do and be prepared.
  • Maintain a safe following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Concentrate on the driving task.
