Driving and Operation

Hills and Mountain Roads

~1min read

Driving on steep grades or through mountains differs from driving on level or rolling terrain. Tips include:

  • Keep the vehicle in good operating condition and good shape.
  • Check the levels of all fluids and the brakes, tires, cooling system, and transmission fluid.
  • Shift to a lower gear when driving down steep or long hills.
  • Drive at a speed that keeps the vehicle in its lane. Do not swerve widely or cross the center line.
  • Be alert at the tops of hills; something may be in your lane (for example, a stalled vehicle or an accident).
  • Pay attention to special road signs (for example, falling rocks area, winding roads, long grades, passing and no-passing zones) and take appropriate action.
