Before Driving

Checking the Engine Oil Level

~1min read

Oil consumption during vehicle operation is completely normal, so check the engine oil level regularly, for example, each time you refuel. Always check the oil level before a long trip.

Oil consumption depends on driving style as well as climatic and road conditions. Normal oil consumption is up to approximately 1 liter per 1000 km.

A new engine that has not been broken in may consume somewhat more oil than specified.

When checking the oil level, the vehicle must be on a level surface and the engine must be warm. It is recommended to check the engine oil level approximately 3 minutes after the engine is switched off.

1. Remove the engine oil dipstick (with orange handle).

Remove the dipstick carefully to avoid spilling engine oil. Spilled oil may damage equipment located in the engine compartment.

2. Wipe the dipstick dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.

3. Insert the dipstick into the guide tube and push it down as far as it will go.

4. Remove the oil level dipstick again and check the oil level. The level must be between the upper and lower marks.

If the oil level is near or below the lower mark on the dipstick, add engine oil as described in the section "Adding Engine Oil" on page 368 for gasoline engines and on page 370 for diesel engines.
