Starter - Pinion Gear Axial Clearance Adjustment, Pull-In Coil Inspection

PINION GEAR AXIAL CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

1. Disconnect the stator winding wire from the "M" terminal of the magnetic switch.

2. Connect the wires from the 12 V battery terminals (through a switch) to the "S" (+) and "M" (-) terminals of the magnetic switch.

3. Set the switch to the "ON" position. The pinion gear will extend forward until it stops.

Perform this check quickly, for no more than 10 seconds, to prevent the starter winding from burning out.

4. Using a feeler gauge, measure the axial clearance between the pinion gear and the stopper ring. If the axial clearance is not within the specified range, adjust it by installing or removing adjusting shims between the magnetic switch and the front bracket of the starter.

Standard clearance: 0.5 - 2.0 mm

PULL-IN COIL INSPECTION

1. Disconnect the stator winding wire from the "M" terminal of the magnetic switch.

2. Connect the wires from the 12 V battery terminals to the "S" (+) and "M" (-) terminals of the magnetic switch.

Perform this check quickly, for no more than 10 seconds, to prevent the starter winding from burning out.

3. If the pinion gear extends, the pull-in coil of the magnetic switch is good. If the pinion gear does not extend, replace the magnetic switch.
