Driving Your Vehicle

Starting the Engine

~2min read

WARNING

  • Always wear appropriate footwear when operating the vehicle. Inappropriate footwear, such as high heels, ski boots, sandals, or slippers, may interfere with your ability to use the brake and accelerator pedals.
  • Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move and cause an accident.
  • Wait until the engine speed is normal. The vehicle may move suddenly if the brake pedal is released when the engine speed is high.

✽ NOTICE

  • The engine will start by pressing the Engine Start/Stop button only when the Smart Key is inside the vehicle.
  • Even if the Smart Key is inside the vehicle, the engine may not start if it is far from the driver.
  • When the Engine Start/Stop button is in the ACC or ON position and any door is open, the system checks for the Smart Key. If the Smart Key is not in the vehicle, the "Key Not In Vehicle" warning will appear, and if all doors are closed, a chime will also sound for about 5 seconds. The indicator turns off while the vehicle is moving. Keep the Smart Key in the vehicle when using the ACC position or when the engine is running.

1. Always carry the Smart Key with you.

2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

3. Make sure the shift lever is in P (Park).

4. Depress the brake pedal.

5. Press the Engine Start/Stop button.

6. Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle is stationary. Start moving at moderate engine speed. (Rapid acceleration and deceleration should be avoided.)

✽ NOTICE

Always start the vehicle with your foot on the brake pedal. Do not depress the accelerator pedal when starting the vehicle. Do not race the engine while it is warming up.

CAUTION

To avoid damage to the vehicle:

  • If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to shift the lever to P (Park). If traffic and road conditions permit, you may place the shift lever in N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving and press the Engine Start/Stop button to attempt to restart the engine.
  • Do not push or tow the vehicle to start the engine.

CAUTION

To avoid damage to the vehicle:

Do not press the Engine Start/Stop button for more than 10 seconds, unless the stop lamp fuse has blown.

When the stop lamp fuse is blown, the engine cannot be started normally. Replace the fuse with a new one. If you are unable to replace the fuse, you can start the engine by pressing and holding the Engine Start/Stop button for 10 seconds with the Engine Start/Stop button in the ACC position.

For your safety, always depress the brake pedal before starting the engine.

✽ NOTICE

If the Smart Key battery is discharged or the Smart Key is not functioning properly, you can start the engine by pressing the Engine Start/Stop button with the Smart Key in the direction shown in the illustration above.
