Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)

~2min read

Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) is a function of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. It helps maintain vehicle stability during acceleration or sudden braking on wet, slippery, or uneven roads, where tire traction may suddenly become uneven.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions when using the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system:

  • ALWAYS check your speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead. VSM does not replace safe driving practices.
  • Never drive too fast for road conditions. The VSM system will not prevent accidents. Excessive speed in bad weather or on slippery or uneven roads may result in serious accidents.

VSM Operation

VSM Operating Status

VSM operates when:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is turned on.
  • Vehicle speed is above approximately 15 km/h on curved roads.
  • The vehicle speed is approximately above 20 km/h when driving. Braking on uneven road surfaces.

During Operation

When you depress the brake pedal under conditions that may activate ESC, you may hear a brake noise or feel a corresponding pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and indicates that your VSM is active.

NOTICE

VSM does not operate when:

  • Driving on a road with a grade, such as a hill or a slope.
  • Driving in reverse.
  • The ESC OFF indicator is on.
  • The EPS (Electronic Power Steering) warning light ( ) illuminates or flashes.

WARNING

If the ESC indicator ( Hyundai Ioniq. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) ) or EPS warning light ( Hyundai Ioniq. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) ) illuminates or flashes, your vehicle may have a malfunction in the VSM system. If the warning light remains on, have your vehicle checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

Driving with tires and wheels of different sizes may cause the ESC system to malfunction. Before replacing tires, make sure that all four tires and wheels are the same size. Never drive the vehicle with tires and wheels of different sizes installed.
