Electric Power Steering (EPS)

~2min read

This system assists in steering the vehicle. If the engine is off or if the power steering system malfunctions, the vehicle can still be steered, but it will require increased steering effort.

In addition, the steering wheel effort increases as vehicle speed increases and becomes lighter as vehicle speed decreases for better steering control.

If you notice any change in the effort required to steer during normal driving, it is recommended that you have the system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

NOTICE

  • If the electric power steering system is not operating normally, the warning light ( ) will illuminate or flash on the instrument cluster. The steering wheel may become difficult to control or steer. Take your vehicle to an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and have the system checked as soon as possible.
  • If a malfunction occurs in the electric power steering system, the power steering assist function will be disabled to prevent a fatal accident. At this time, the warning light on the instrument cluster will illuminate or flash. Steering may become difficult to control. Have your vehicle checked immediately after moving it to a safe location.

Information

The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • Steering wheel effort may be high immediately after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position. This occurs while the system performs the EPS self-diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel will return to its normal condition.
  • A clicking sound may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or LOCK/OFF position.
  • Engine noise may be heard when the vehicle is stopped or moving at low vehicle speed.
  • When operating the steering wheel at low temperatures, an abnormal noise may occur. If the temperature rises, the noise will disappear. This is a normal condition.
  • When the vehicle is stopped, if you keep turning the steering wheel fully to the left or right, the steering effort increases. This is not a system malfunction. Over time, the steering effort will return to normal.
