SRS Airbag System Components and Their Functions

~3min read

The SRS airbag system includes the following components:

1. Driver airbag module*
2. Front passenger airbag module*
3. Side airbag modules*
4. Curtain airbag modules*
5. Seat belt pretensioner assemblies*
6. Airbag warning lamp
7. SRS airbag control module (SRSCM)
8. Frontal impact sensors
9. Side impact sensors*

*: if equipped

When the ignition key is in the "ON" position, the SRSCM of the SRS supplemental restraint system continuously monitors all of its components so that, in the event of a crash, it can determine whether the airbags and seat belt pretensioners must be activated at the given impact severity.

SRS airbag warning lamp "приборной панели после включения зажигания, после чего контрольная лампа должна" illuminates on the instrument panel for 6 seconds after the ignition is turned on, after which the lamp should go off.

WARNING

The following are signs of malfunctions in the SRS system. If any of these occur, the airbag system must be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

• The warning lamp does not illuminate briefly when the ignition key is turned to the ON position.
• The warning lamp remains illuminated after 6 seconds.
• The lamp illuminates while the vehicle is being driven.
• The lamp flashes when the ignition key is in the ON position.

The airbag modules are located in the center of the steering wheel and inside the instrument panel opposite the front passenger seat above the glove box. When the SRSCM detects a severe impact to the front of the vehicle, it automatically commands the airbags to deploy.

During deployment, the pressure of the inflating airbags will break open the covers at their pre-scored tear seams. Further opening of the covers allows the airbags to fully inflate.

A fully inflated airbag, together with a properly positioned seat belt, will slow the forward movement of the driver's or passenger's body, thereby reducing the risk of head or chest injury.

Once the airbag has fully inflated, it will immediately begin to deflate, allowing the driver to see forward and to control the vehicle using the steering wheel or other controls.

ОСТОРОЖНО

WARNING

• Do not install or place any accessories (cup holders, cassette holders, notepads, etc.) on the instrument panel in front of the passenger, above the glove box, in a vehicle equipped with a passenger airbag. Such items may move suddenly and cause injury when the passenger airbag deploys.

• When installing an air freshener inside the passenger compartment, make sure it is not placed near the instruments or on the surface of the instrument panel.

Such items may move suddenly and cause injury when the passenger airbag deploys.

WARNING

• Airbag deployment may be accompanied by a loud noise and the release of fine dust into the passenger compartment. This is normal and does not pose any threat: the airbags are packed with this powder when not in use. The dust released during airbag deployment may cause skin or eye irritation and may aggravate asthma symptoms in some people.

After a traffic accident in which the airbags have deployed, always thoroughly wash all exposed skin with warm water and mild soap.

• The SRS airbag system can only operate when the ignition is on (when the key is in the ON position).

If the airbag warning lamp does not illuminate, or remains on approximately 6 seconds after turning the ignition key to the ON position or starting the engine, or illuminates while driving, this indicates a malfunction in the SRS airbag system. In this case, immediately have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

• Before replacing a fuse or disconnecting any battery terminal, turn the ignition key to the LOCK position and remove the key from the ignition switch.

Never remove or replace the fuse(s) related to the airbag system while the ignition key is in the ON position.

Failure to observe this warning will cause the SRS airbag warning lamp to illuminate.
