Installing a Child Restraint System with a Lap/Shoulder Belt

~1min read

To install a child restraint system on a seat, perform the following steps:

1. To install the child restraint system securely, adjust the seat (seatback angle and/or seat fore and aft position) so that your child fits in the child restraint system comfortably. To properly position the child restraint system in all adjustment positions, the front passenger seat may be moved rearward. In this case, the seatback must not extend beyond the shoulder belt anchorage.

Place the child restraint system on the seat and route the lap/shoulder belt around or through the child restraint system, following the child restraint manufacturer's instructions. Make sure the seat belt webbing is not twisted.

2. Fasten the lap/shoulder belt latch into the buckle. Listen for a distinct "click".

Position the release button so that it is easily accessible in an emergency.

3. Fasten the seat belt and allow the seat belt to take up any slack. After installing the child restraint system, try to move it in all directions to make sure the child restraint system is securely installed.

If you need to tighten the belt, pull the webbing toward the retractor. When you unbuckle the seat belt and allow it to retract, the retractor automatically returns to the normal emergency locking mode for the seated passenger.
