Hazardous Driving Conditions

When driving in hazardous conditions such as water, snow, ice, mud, sand, or similar hazards, follow these suggestions:

  • Drive carefully and allow extra stopping distance.
  • Avoid sudden braking or steering.
  • When braking without ABS, apply the brake pedal with light up-and-down movements until the vehicle stops.

Do not pump the brake pedal on a vehicle with ABS.

  • If stuck in snow, mud, or sand, use second gear. Accelerate slowly to avoid spinning the wheels.
  • Use sand, rock salt, or other non-slip material under the drive wheels to obtain traction when stuck on ice, in snow, or in mud.

WARNING - Downshifting

Do not downshift with the Smart Variable Transmission when driving on slippery surfaces. A sudden change in tire speed may cause the tires to skid and result in an accident.
