Before Driving
Before Entering the Vehicle
- Make sure all windows, outside mirrors and exterior lamps are clean.
- Check the condition of the tires.
- Check under the vehicle for any signs of leaks.
- Make sure there are no obstacles behind you if you are going to reverse.
Required Checks
Fluid levels, such as engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, and washer fluid, should be checked regularly, at intervals specific to each fluid. More detailed information is provided in Chapter 7, "Maintenance".
WARNING - Distracted Driving
Concentrate on the road while driving. The driver's primary responsibility is to operate the vehicle safely and legally. Portable devices, other equipment, or vehicle systems that distract the driver must not be used while the vehicle is in motion.
Before Starting
- Close and lock all doors.
- Adjust the seat so that all controls are easily accessible.
- Fasten the seat belt.
- Adjust the inside and outside rearview mirrors.
- Make sure all lights work.
- Check all gauges.
- Check the operation of the warning lamps when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.
- Release the parking brake and make sure the brake warning light goes off.
For safe operation, make sure you are familiar with your vehicle and its equipment.
WARNING. Fire Hazard.
If you are going to park or stop the vehicle with the engine running, be careful. Do not depress the accelerator pedal for a long period of time. The engine or exhaust system may overheat and cause a fire.
WARNING - Check the Surroundings
Always check the area around the vehicle for people, especially children, before shifting into D (Drive) or R (Reverse).
WARNING - Loose Objects
Store items in the vehicle securely. When you stop suddenly or turn the steering wheel quickly, loose items may fall to the floor and interfere with the pedals, which may cause an accident.
WARNING - Proper Footwear
Always wear proper footwear when driving. Improper footwear (high heels, ski boots, sandals, etc.) may prevent you from operating the brake and accelerator pedals properly.
WARNING - Driving Under the Influence
Do not drive after drinking alcohol. Driving under the influence is dangerous. Even a small amount of alcohol will affect your reflexes, perception, and judgment. Driving under the influence of drugs is just as dangerous as driving drunk, or even more so.
