Emergency Release of the Power Tailgate

~1min read

Your vehicle is equipped with an emergency release lever for the liftgate, located at the bottom of the liftgate. If someone is accidentally trapped in the cargo area, the liftgate can be opened by performing the following steps:

1. Remove the cover.

2. Push the latch lever to the right.

3. Lift the tailgate.

WARNING

  • In an emergency, be fully aware of the location of the liftgate emergency release lever in the vehicle and how to open the liftgate if you are accidentally trapped in the cargo area.
  • No one should ever be allowed to ride in the luggage compartment of the vehicle. The luggage compartment is a very dangerous place in the event of a collision.
  • Use the release lever only in emergencies. Use with extreme caution, especially while the vehicle is moving.

WARNING

NEVER allow anyone to ride in the rear cargo area of the vehicle. If the liftgate is partially or fully closed and a person cannot get out, serious injury or death may result from lack of ventilation, exhaust gases, rapid buildup of heat, or exposure to cold weather. The rear cargo area is also a very dangerous place in a collision because it is not a protected passenger area and is part of the vehicle's crush zone.

  • You and your passengers should know the location of the liftgate emergency release lever in this vehicle and how to open the liftgate if you are accidentally trapped in the cargo area.
  • Your vehicle should be locked and the Smart Key should not be within the reach of children. Parents should inform their children of the dangers of playing in the rear cargo area or operating the liftgate.
  • Use the release lever only in an emergency.

WARNING

Do not grab the component that supports the rear lift gate (gas strut), as this may result in serious injury.
