Removal

  1. Remove the engine cover.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the air duct and air cleaner assembly. (Refer to Intake and Exhaust System - "Air Cleaner")
  4. Disconnect the mounting bracket, then remove the battery. (Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Battery")
  5. Disconnect the ECM connector, then remove the battery tray. (Refer to Engine Electrical System - Battery)
  6. Remove the engine room cover.
  7. Loosen the drain plug and drain the coolant. Open the radiator cap to speed up draining. (Refer to Cooling System - Coolant)
  8. Remove the upper radiator hose (A) and lower hose (B).
  9. Recover the refrigerant, then remove the high pressure line and low pressure line. (Refer to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning - "Compressor")
  10. Disconnect the wiring connector and cable from the transaxle.
  11. Remove the ATF cooler hose.
  12. Disconnect the clamp and remove the heater hose (A).
  13. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose (A).
  14. Disconnect the fuel hose (A) and the PCSV (Purge Control Solenoid Valve) (B).
  15. Disconnect the (+) cable (A), fuse block connector (B), EMS unit (C), then remove the engine wiring. Tightening torque: Nut (A): 6.9 ~ 10.8 N·m Ground bolt (D): 10.8 ~ 13.7 N·m
  16. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connectors (A).
  17. Remove the front muffler. (Refer to Intake and Exhaust System - "Muffler")
  18. Support the subframe with a jack, then remove the subframe mounting bolts and nuts. (Refer to Suspension System - "Subframe")
  19. Disconnect the ground cable, then remove the engine mount bracket. (Engine and Transaxle Assembly - "Engine Mount")
  20. Disconnect the ground cable, then remove the transaxle mounting bracket bolts.
  21. Remove the engine and transaxle assembly (A) by moving it forward from the vehicle.

Installation

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Perform the following:
  • Adjust the shift cable.
  • Adjust the accelerator cable.
  • Fill the engine with engine oil.
  • Fill the transmission with fluid.
  • Fill the power steering fluid.
  • Fill the radiator and the coolant reservoir with engine coolant.
  • Set the heater control lever to the "HOT" position.
  • Clean the battery terminal posts and cable clamps, then assemble.
  • Inspect for fuel leaks.
  • After assembling the fuel line, turn the ignition on (do not crank the engine) so the fuel pump operates for about two seconds and pressurizes the fuel line.
  • Repeat this operation two or three times, then check for fuel leaks at all points of the fuel line.
  • Bleed air from the cooling system.
  • Start the engine and let it run until it warms up (until the radiator fan cycles 3 or 4 times).
  • Turn the engine off. Check the radiator level and add coolant if necessary. This allows air trapped in the cooling system to be removed.
