Parking on Hills
As a general rule, if you have a trailer attached to your vehicle, do not park your vehicle on a hill. People may be seriously or fatally injured, and both your vehicle and trailer may be damaged if they roll down the slope unexpectedly.
WARNING! Parking on a Hill
Parking your vehicle on a hill with an attached trailer may result in serious injury or death if the trailer breaks loose.
Do not depress the accelerator pedal to hold the vehicle on a hill.
However, if you ever have to park your trailer on a hill, follow these steps:
1. Drive the vehicle into the parking space. Turn the steering wheel toward the curb (to the right when facing downhill, to the left when facing uphill).
2. If the vehicle has a manual transmission, shift into Neutral. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, shift into P (Park).
3. Apply the parking brake and turn off the vehicle.
4. Place wheel chocks under the trailer wheels on the downhill side.
5. Start the engine, depress the brake pedal, shift to Neutral, release the parking brake, and slowly release the brake pedal until the trailer chocks take the load.
6. Depress the brake pedal again and apply the parking brake. Shift the vehicle into R (Reverse) for a manual transmission or P (Park) for an automatic transmission.
7. Turn off the engine and release the brake, but leave the parking brake applied.
WARNING - Parking Brake
It is dangerous to leave your vehicle if the parking brake is not firmly applied.
If you leave the engine running, the vehicle may suddenly move. You or others may be seriously or fatally injured.
When you are ready to drive away after parking on a hill
1. With a manual transmission in Neutral or an automatic transmission in P (Park), depress the brake pedal and keep the brake pedal down until you:
- Start the engine;
- Engage a gear; and
- Release the parking brake.
2. Slowly release the brake pedal.
3. Move slowly until the trailer brakes engage.
4. Stop and ask someone to pick up and store the wheel chocks.
