SRS Components and Functions

~3min read

The SRS consists of the following components:

1. Driver's Front Airbag Module
2. Front Passenger's Airbag Module
3. Side Airbag Modules*
4. Curtain Airbag Modules*
5. Seat Belt Pretensioner Assemblies
6. Airbag Warning Lamp
7. SRS Control Module (SRSCM)
8. Front Impact Sensors
9. Side Impact Sensors*
10. Front Passenger Airbag ON/OFF Indicator
11. Front Passenger Airbag ON/OFF Switch

The SRSCM constantly monitors all components while the ignition is ON to determine whether a frontal, near-frontal or side impact is severe enough to require airbag deployment or seat belt pretensioner deployment.

The SRS warning lamp on the instrument panel should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, and then the airbag warning lamp should go off.

WARNING

If any of the following conditions occur, this indicates a malfunction of the SRS. We recommend that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

  • The lamp does not illuminate briefly when the ignition switch is turned ON.
  • The light remains on after illuminating for approximately 6 seconds.
  • The lamp illuminates while the vehicle is being driven.
  • The lamp flashes when the ignition switch is in the ON position.

Driver's front airbag (1)

The airbag modules are located in the center of the steering wheel and in the front passenger panel above the glove box. When the SRSCM detects a sufficiently strong impact to the front of the vehicle, it automatically deploys the front airbags.

Driver's front airbag (2)

When deploying, tear seams form directly in the covers, and the covers separate under the pressure of the airbag expansion. Further opening of the covers then allows the airbags to fully inflate.

Driver's front airbag (3)

A fully inflated airbag, in combination with a properly worn seat belt, slows the forward movement of the driver or front passenger, reducing the risk of head and chest injuries.

After full deployment, the airbag immediately begins to deflate, allowing the driver to maintain forward visibility and the ability to steer or operate other controls.

Passenger Front Air Bag

WARNING

  • Do not install or place accessories (cup holder, cassette holder, sticker, etc.) on the front passenger panel above the glove box in a vehicle with a passenger airbag. Such objects can become dangerous projectiles and cause injury if the passenger airbag deploys.
  • When installing a liquid-type car air freshener, do not place it near the instrument cluster or on the surface of the instrument panel. It can become a dangerous projectile and cause injury if the passenger airbag deploys.
  • When an airbag deploys, a loud noise may occur, followed by a fine dust entering the vehicle. These conditions are normal and not dangerous; the airbags are packed with this fine powder. Dust produced in the air when the bag deploys may cause skin irritation or eye irritation, and may aggravate asthma in some people. Always wash all exposed skin areas thoroughly with cold water and mild soap after an accident in which the airbags have deployed.
  • The SRS can operate only when the ignition key is in the ON position. If the SRS airbag warning lamp does not illuminate, or stays illuminated continuously after illuminating for about 6 seconds when the ignition key is turned to the ON position, or illuminates while driving, or the engine has started, the SRS is not operating properly. If this occurs, we recommend that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
  • Before replacing a fuse or disconnecting the battery terminal, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the ignition key. Never remove or replace the airbag-related fuse(s) when the ignition key is in the ON position. Failure to observe this warning will cause the SRS airbag warning light to illuminate.
