Components and Component Location

Component Location

1. Mode Control Actuator

Description and Operation

Description

The mode control actuator is located on the heater unit.

It controls the position of the mode door by operating the mode control actuator according to the signal from the air conditioning control unit. Pressing the mode select switch changes the mode control actuator in the following order: Vent → Bi-Level → Floor → Mix.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Disconnect the mode control actuator connector.

  3. Check that the mode control actuator operates in the defrost position when 12 V is applied to terminal 3 and ground is applied to terminal 7.

Check that the mode control actuator operates in the vent mode when the connections are reversed.

  4. Connect the mode control actuator connector.

  5. Turn the ignition on.

  6. Check the voltage between terminals 6 and 5.

    Specification

Door Position Voltage (V) Fault Detection
    vent 0.5 ± 0.15 V Low voltage: 0.1 V or less
    Defrost 4.5 ± 0.15 V High voltage: 4.9 V or more
  7. If the measured voltage does not meet the specification, check operation by replacing the existing mode control actuator with a new genuine part. Then determine whether replacement of the mode control actuator is required.

Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  2. Remove the driver airbag module assembly.

(See Body — "Main Airbag Assembly")

  3. Disconnect the connector (A), loosen the mounting screws, and remove the mode control actuator (B).

  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
