Check the oil clearance of the main bearing.
Remove the main bearing caps (A).
Check the crankshaft end play.
Lift the crankshaft (A) out of the engine, taking care not to damage the journals.
Inspection
Check the oil clearance of the crankshaft main bearings.
To check the oil clearance between the main bearing and journal, remove the main bearings.
Clean each main journal and bearing half with a clean shop towel.
Place one strip of Plastigage on each main journal.
Install the bearings and bolts in place in the following manner, tightening them to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 17.7–22 N·m + 103–105°
Remove the cap and bearing again and measure the widest part of the Plastigage.
Standard oil clearance: 0.006–0.024 mm (0.0002–0.0009 in.)
If the Plastigage is too wide or too narrow, remove the upper bearing half, install a new matching bearing with the same color code (select the color as shown in the following column), and recheck the clearance.
If the Plastigage shows the clearance is still incorrect, try the next larger or smaller bearing (the color one above or below this one) and recheck the clearance.
Location of the journal hole mark on the crankshaft of the cylinder block. Letters indicating the size of each of the 5 main journal bores are stamped on the front surface of the block. Use them, together with the numbers or bar stamped on the crankshaft (main journal size marks), to select the correct bearings.Cylinder Block Main Journal Bore Grade

Inspect the crankshaft end play. Using a dial indicator, measure the end play while prying the crankshaft forward and backward with a screwdriver.
Standard end play: 0.07–0.25 mm (0.0028–0.0098 in.)
If the end play exceeds the maximum, replace the center main bearings as a set. Thrust bearing thickness: 1.925–1.965 mm (0.0757–0.0774 in.). Crankshaft end play: 0.07–0.25 mm (0.0028–0.0098 in.)
Inspect the crankshaft main journals and crankpins. Using a micrometer, measure the diameter of each main journal and crankpin. Main journal diameter: 47.942–47.960 mm (1.8875–1.8882 in.). Crankpin diameter: 38.954–38.972 mm (1.5336–1.5343 in.)
Installation
Install the crankshaft main bearings.
Align the bearing tab with the tab groove of the cylinder block and install the 4 upper bearings (A).
Install the 2 thrust bearings (A) under the No. 2 journal of the cylinder block with the oil grooves facing outward.
Install the crankshaft (A) on the cylinder block.
Install the main bearing cap (A).
Install and tighten the 8 main bearing cap bolts in several passes in the specified sequence.
Tightening torque: 17.7–22 N·m + 103–105°
Make sure the crankshaft rotates smoothly.
Check the crankshaft end play.
Assemble the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
