Smart Key Functions

With the smart key, you can lock or unlock the doors and even start the engine without inserting the key.

The smart key buttons function in the same way as the remote keyless entry. (Refer to "Remote Keyless Entry" in this chapter.)

Locking

When all doors are closed and any door is unlocked, pressing the button on the front door outside handle locks all doors (and the hood and tailgate).

The hazard lights will flash and the horn will sound once to indicate that all doors are locked. The button will only work when the smart key is within 0.7 ~ 1 m (28 ~ 40 in.) of the outside door handle. To make sure the door is locked or not, check the door lock button inside the vehicle or pull the outside door handle.

In some cases, when the outside door button is pressed, the doors will not lock, and the horn will sound for 3 seconds if one of the following events occurs:

  • The smart key is inside the vehicle.
  • The ignition switch is in the ACC or ON position.
  • Any door except the trunk/tailgate is open.

Unlocking

When all doors are closed and locked, pressing the button on the driver's door outside handle unlocks the driver's door. The hazard lights will flash and the horn will sound twice to indicate that the driver's door is unlocked.

When all doors are closed and locked, pressing the button on the front passenger's door outside handle unlocks all doors. The hazard lights will flash and the horn will sound twice to indicate that all doors are unlocked. The button will only work when the smart key is within 0.7 ~ 1 m (28 ~ 40 in.) of the outside door handle.

Starting

You can start the engine without inserting the key. For details, refer to "Starting the Engine with the Smart Key" in Chapter 6.

Opening the Trunk Lid (for 4-door)

  • When the smart key is within 70 ~ 100 cm (28 ~ 40 in.) of the outside trunk handle and you press the handle, the trunk lid will open.
  • When you open and close the trunk lid with all doors closed, the doors will lock again (the indicator light will flash once).
  • When you close the trunk lid with the smart key inside the trunk, the alarm sounds and the light goes off for approximately 5 seconds. During this time the trunk lid will not be locked, so you must press the button to open it again.

Unlocking the Tailgate (for 5-door)

  • When the smart key is within 70 ~ 100 cm (28 ~ 40 in.) of the outside tailgate handle, pressing the handle opens the tailgate.
  • When you open and close the tailgate with all doors closed, the doors will lock again (the indicator light will flash once).
  • When you close the tailgate with the smart key inside the luggage compartment, the reminder function of the smart key will unlock all doors. During this time the tailgate will not be locked, so you must press the button to open it again.

Smart Key Precautions

  • If you lose the Smart Key, you will not be able to start the engine. Tow the vehicle if necessary and contact an authorized Kia dealer.
  • No more than 2 Smart Keys can be registered to one vehicle. If you lose a Smart Key, you must immediately take the vehicle and the key to an authorized Kia dealer to protect against potential theft.
  • The Smart Key will not work if one of the following occurs:
    - The Smart Key is near a radio transmitter, such as a broadcasting station or airport radio, which may interfere with normal operation of the electronic key.
    - The Smart Key is near a mobile two-way radio system or cellular phone.
    - The Smart Key of another vehicle is being used near your vehicle.
If the Smart Key does not operate properly, lock and unlock the door with the mechanical key. If you have a problem with the Smart Key, contact an authorized Kia dealer.
  • If the Smart Key is in close proximity to your mobile phone or smartphone, the signal from the Smart Key may be blocked by normal operation of your cellular phone or smartphone. This is especially likely when the phone is in use, such as making or receiving calls, sending or receiving text messages, and/or sending or receiving e-mail. Do not place the Smart Key and mobile phone or smartphone in the same trouser or jacket pocket, and keep a sufficient distance between the two devices.
  • Always carry the Smart Key with you when leaving the vehicle. Leaving the Smart Key unattended near the vehicle may discharge the vehicle battery.
  • Damage to the internal circuit may occur if the key is exposed to moisture (drink, water, etc.) or heat. In this case, warranty repair is not possible. Damage to the Smart Key caused by exposure to liquids or heat is not covered by the vehicle manufacturer's warranty.

CAUTION - Transmitter

Keep the Smart Key away from water or any other liquid, as it may be damaged and may not function properly.
