Steering Wheel

Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The power steering system uses the engine to help you steer the vehicle. If the engine is off or if the power steering system fails, the vehicle can still be steered, but it will require increased steering effort.

The electric power steering (EPS) is controlled by the power steering control unit, which determines the steering wheel torque and vehicle speed in order to control the motor.

The steering wheel becomes heavier as vehicle speed increases and becomes lighter as vehicle speed decreases, for better steering wheel control.

If you notice any change in the effort required to steer during normal operation, have the power steering system checked by an authorized Kia dealer.

✽ NOTICE

The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • Steering effort increases immediately after the ignition switch is turned ON. This occurs while the system performs an EPS system diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel will return to normal condition.
  • A click may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or LOCK position.
  • A motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is stopped or moving at low speed.
  • Steering effort increases if the steering wheel is turned continuously while the vehicle is not moving. However, it will return to normal after a few minutes.
  • Noise may be heard when operating the steering wheel at low temperatures. If the temperature rises, the noise will most likely disappear. This is a normal condition.
  • When the charging system warning light illuminates or the battery voltage is low (when the alternator or battery is not operating normally), the steering wheel may become heavy, making it difficult to control, or may operate abnormally.

If the electric power steering system is not operating normally, the warning light on the instrument cluster will illuminate. The steering wheel may require increased steering effort. Take your vehicle to an authorized Kia dealer and have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
